Plant-Based Diet and Longevity

A plant-based diet has been shown to be associated with longevity. The Blue Zones are the regions across the world where there are the longest lived people and the greatest number of centenarians. In these regions, the diets are primarily plant-based. They eat very little animal products. They consume fresh fruits, vegetable, nuts, beans, grains and root vegetables such as potatoes. Of the Blue Zones, the areas that consume the least to no meat, have the longest lifespans. The Blue Zones include Ikaria, Greece, Okinawa, Japan, Sardinia, Italy, Loma Linda, California and Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica. In addition, to a plant based diet, these centenarians have close family and community involvement and they are active enjoying a good quality of life. Lifestyle choices including staying active, healthful eating, and good social network are all contributing factors to these centenarians long life spans. Lifestyle factors play a key role in epigenetics and the expression of our genes. It has been shown that poor lifestyle choices can affect epigenetic gene expression leading to shorter lifespans.

Focusing on optimal health and quality of life is key. In addition, most people want to preserve their youth and increase longevity. The Standard American Diet is high in calories and low in nutrition. A meal at McDonald's can have a full days calories in one meal. Processed food is acidic and loaded in unhealthy oil and sugar and are empty calories. These empty calories and acidity are not only contributing to obesity, heart disease and diabetes, but it is also shortening life span.

Caloric restriction has been shown to extend life span. A plant based diet is low in calories and nutrient dense. Choosing foods that supplies the body with the nutrition it needs and supports the alkaline design of the body is key in maintaining healthy cells and regeneration of cells. With better quality food, the body will run more efficiently. Adopting a plant based diet, in addition, to other healthy lifestyle choices improves your quality of life, as well as, contributes to longevity.
